Cast Sundial Lupine Earrings / Sterling

$ 120.00

These minimal earrings are cast from a sundial lupine seed collected by Wild Seed Project, a Maine-based nonprofit dedicated to native plant advocacy.

Lupinus perennis: the lupine native to eastern North America. It is rare in New England as the invasive Western Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) displaces it. The sundial lupine is the sole host plant to the endangered Karner Blue butterfly and grows ably in tough conditions.

The genus name derives from the Latin word for wolf, lupus, because of the previous belief that lupines deplete or "wolf" soil nutrients. But the opposite is true: it is a member of the legume family and improves the soil around where it grows through nitrogen fixation.
